There are many ways to define community. Communities form around places, around values, around stories – at Pfenning’s we’re building communities around food.
As farmers, importers, and distributors of organic food, Pfenning’s works with a wide variety of organizations including retailers, restaurants, manufacturers, schools, and community food centers. We also work with a network of local and organic farmers – some who grow for us, and others who we distribute for. In many ways Pfenning’s is a major hub for local & organic food.
This year we held our 1st annual Market Day event on October 5, 2019. It was a farmers’ market style event with over 15 vendors from across the food community we are growing. Growers we distribute for like Slegers Living Organic Greens, manufacturers who purchase produce from us like Live Kombucha (who we also distribute for), and industry groups like Fruit & Vegetable Magazine participated.
The intent behind the event was to raise funds for Community Food Centres we work with, including:
- Foodshare
- The Seed Community Food Project
- Neighbour 2 Neighbour Center
- The Local Community Food Centre
We raised $1290 total with the help of almost 200 visitors. To raise money we sold soup donated by Meme’s Café, cookies donated by Galt Juice, and coffee donated by Baden coffee. We also had an amazing silent auction with donations from many of our vendors as well as other businesses in the community – like Two Calves Standing (who donated some different heritage meat boxes as well as an in-home catered dinner!).
Guests enjoyed wagon ride tours of the farm, as well as live music provided by Hold The Line. It was a full day of farmers, food and (FUN)draising!
We’re looking forward to doing it again next year. Save the date: Saturday, October 3, 2020.
