Seeking: Indigenous Youth Intern!

Seeking: Indigenous Youth Intern!

Pfenning’s Organic Vegetables Inc. is partnering with Crow Shield Lodge to offer paid internships to five Indigenous Youth (16 to 30 years of age)

Crow Shield Lodge will be leading the youth in the land-based learning and teaching initiative. The youth who participate in the program will experience how the land is the core of their existence. They will work together on  building  land -based structures, learn teachings and build community. The youth will learn about their Indigenous identity through the land, find a connection of wellness and engage in cultural-based practises.

This project seeks to honour and uphold the spirit of the original treaties in sharing land and knowledge between Indigenous people and settlers.  One of the key goals is to increase traditional and farming knowledge for Indigenous youth and by extension access for the Indigenous community to nutritious, culturally appropriate, local, organic produce.

We are looking for Indigenous youth whoare team oriented and eager to learn. Our ideal candidates will have lived experience as Indigenous (either in urban settings or on reserve). Flexibility, positivity, and commitment to environmental responsibility are other key qualities for this role.

The role will include work alongside our experienced and skilled farm team. Successful candidates will learn professional vegetable farming skills such as planting, weed and pest management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. This role will include shifts in the evenings and on weekends.

This position will run from roughly June 1 to Friday, July 23, 2021. Compensation for this position is $14.25 per hour. Employment on the farm may continue past the end of the specific project length depending on interest from the candidates.

If you are interested in being part of this reconciliation project, please apply to Jenn Pfenning by emailing jenn@pfenningsfarms.ca

Experience with local and organic food is great,  but not essential as long you are willing to learn!
